Bridging Communication Gaps

Mashov is an app designed to connect teachers, parents, and students, providing a centralized platform to track exams, assignments, and other academic tasks. However, despite its intended purpose, the app faces challenges in facilitating easy task management and communication for its users.

Mashov Falls Short on Task Management
Students struggle to keep track of tasks and exams, especially during times of stress and heavy workload.

What Are the Students Saying?
In order to understand the challenges students face with the app, I conducted a survey and interviewed middle school students.

Users report using the app very minimally

Rarely use Mashov for task management

Rely mainly on emails and WhatsApp for updates
-
Difficulty in Tracking Tasks and Exams
Notifications and updates are scattered across multiple platforms, such as emails, WhatsApp, and Mashov itself. This fragmentation makes it challenging for students and parents to stay organized and up-to-date with deadlines.
-
Lack of Task Management and Scheduling
Currently, the app lacks tools to prioritize and organize assignments, leaving users without a structured system to manage academic responsibilities.
-
Challenge in Finding Assignments
Assignments are hosted externally on a site called Moodle, organized by subject categories. Users must enter each subject individually to check for assignments, making it challenging to get a clear overview of the schedule.

How I Helped Students Cope with Task Pressure and Overload
After identifying the challenges, I conducted research on competitors to understand how they address student task management and updates. I also gathered insights by speaking with Middle School students, leading to the following conclusions:
Engaging students through seamless interaction is key by offering an intuitive, personalized overview of all tasks and consolidating assignments in one place, the design keeps students focused and empowered to take action effortlessly.

Personalized Student Calendar
A customized calendar displays all assignments, exams, and updates in one view, making it easier for students to visualize and plan their workload.

Progress Tracking for Assignments
A progress indicator was added to each task, enabling students to track their completion status. This feature provides students with a sense of accomplishment for completed tasks while highlighting pending assignments that need attention.

Centralized Notifications Channel
To eliminate scattered notifications, all updates, announcements, and task reminders are now funneled into a single, accessible channel within Mashov. This consolidation ensures users stay informed without toggling between different platforms.

Join the Challenge Feature
This feature helps teachers motivate students to tackle tasks that may be less interesting or more challenging. By incorporating elements of competition and rewards, familiar from gaming, it adds an engaging twist that students recognize and enjoy.
Focusing on Essential Student Actions
After identifying the pain points, I mapped out the daily actions most essential for students and chose a flow that emphasizes task tracking and progress updates. This approach addresses students' current weak points, helping them stay organized and on top of their responsibilities.
